With a lot of recent amazing fresh graduates being produced, it is undeniably getting harder to land a job, much less your dream job. Even if there are lots of job opportunities out there, we still have to find the one that suits us best.

As an English major, I really struggled with this. It was hard for me to find an internship placement that suited my programme’s requirements. This is because in Malaysia, most companies focus more on finding people from finance, medical, engineering, and psychology backgrounds. But when I did find internship placements that met the requirements, getting a response from the companies became a struggle.

My recent job search highlighted the importance of strong application materials. While I had a good resume and cover letter initially, my research showed they lacked the uniqueness needed to stand out.

After making some targeted changes (don’t worry, I’ll tell you what they are in a short while), I secured interviews with several companies, including SOLS Foundation – my dream workplace since I first discovered them.

As someone who landed multiple interviews after optimising my application, here are some valuable tips I learned:

1. Cover Letter

A cover letter is the first opportunity you have to make a good impression on the company you are applying to. It's your chance to showcase your personality and tailor your skills to the specific role you're applying for. To grab the hiring manager's attention, your cover letter needs to be concise, impactful, and free of typos.

2. Resume

This single-page document (or double, sometimes) acts as your professional snapshot. It should be tailored to each job you apply for, highlighting the skills and experiences most relevant to the specific position. This targeted approach helps you bypass applicant tracking systems and showcases your understanding of the company's needs.

So, how did I achieve these improvements? It was all thanks to SOLS Skills Hub's online self-study courses on cover letter and resume writing techniques. The flexibility of learning at my own pace, without pressure, was incredibly helpful. These courses even included live online sessions with instructors, allowing me to ask questions and receive immediate feedback. If you're struggling with your job search, I highly recommend checking out the courses on Skills Hub – trust me, it could be a real game-changer.

Remember, a well-crafted resume paired with a strong cover letter is your golden ticket to securing that dream interview!
