What do I need?

To be shortlisted for this position, you will need to have:

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Able to commit to 12-month placement in rural/remote Indigenous village.
  • Strong spoken and written English; basic Bahasa Malaysia proficiency an asset.
  • Basic digital literacy (MS Office, Google Drive).

Preferred:

  • Experience in teaching, volunteering, or working with underserved communities.
  • Motorcycle licence (especially for villages with limited transport).
  • Understanding of Indigenous issues, community organising, or rural development.
  • Experience in Education, Social Sciences, Community Development or related fields.

Culture Personality Fit:

  • At the ASLI Centre, we’re not just looking for someone who can teach. We’re looking for someone who wants to walk alongside a community, with patience, presence, and purpose. If you're the kind of person who:
  • Builds trust through consistency: You show up, follow through, and you become someone the community can count on, not just for lessons, but for connection.
  • Finds joy in the basics: You’re happy teaching ABCs, playing games with children, or sitting with a parent after class. You don’t need fancy tools or big achievements to feel fulfilled.
  • Stays grounded under pressure: Village life can be isolating, slow, or unpredictable. You adapt, you breathe, and you keep going with grace.
  • Respects local knowledge: You’re here to support, not to save. You listen before speaking and see the wisdom that already exists in the community.
  • Loves teaching and learning: You care about helping people grow, whether it’s a child reading, or an elder picking up a new word in English.
  • Is okay with being out of your comfort zone: You might be the only non-local. The food, pace, and culture will be different. But you're curious, open, and willing to embrace it all.
  • We care deeply about character. If you’ve never lived or worked in a rural village before, but you're steady, sincere, and ready for a year that could change both your life and theirs, we’d love to hear from you.
